- Your aligners should be worn at least 20-22 hours each day. Not wearing your aligners consistently will prevent your teeth from moving and accomplishing desired treatment outcome and goals. Each aligner is designed to pick up from where the last one finishes; thus, if an aligner isn’t worn enough to make the full movements, the following aligner will be less effective. Over time, this accumulates and results in longer treatment time as each future aligner becomes less effective.
- It’s best to start a new aligner before bedtime. It is normal to feel some discomfort and pressure on your teeth when you insert new aligners. You can take over the counter medicine if needed.
- ATTACHMENTS/BUTTONS: These are filling materials with certain shapes on your teeth during the duration of your treatment and will be polished off at the end of treatment. If an attachment comes off, no worries! Just give our office a call within a week to come in and get it replaced. They have a tendency to stain if not properly brushing and/or rinsing your mouth after meals, so please keep up good oral hygiene habits!
- SAVE YOUR ALIGNERS! There may be times when we ask you to go back to previous aligners or if you lose an aligner to go back to a previous one until a new replacement one arrives. We’ll let you know when you can throw away your aligners.
- Your appointments will be made every 8 to 12 weeks depending on the stage you are at. Each visit is to check on your progress and make sure the teeth are moving towards the desired position. Always bring the current tray you are wearing or the box of aligners if possible.
- On your appointment, we may need to slenderize/IPR some teeth. This means slightly stripping in-between the teeth so that they can move as needed. This does not harm the enamel, and in fact, with application of consistent fluoride, can strengthen that area.
- Store your aligners in cases provided. Never wrap them in a napkin or drop them into your pocket or purse. Align will charge a fee to replace broken or lost aligners (typically $25 per aligner).
- You can clean your aligners with warm water and toothpaste or using the Foam dispenser you can purchase from our office.
- Remember that the simulation is a prediction of how your teeth will move. The first round or set of aligners will accomplish 70-80% of the desired movements. The second round will accomplish the remaining movements and sometimes a third round will be needed to fine tune/tweak any movements desired. This is a normal process of the treatment, so do not be alarmed if a refinement is required during your treatment.
