Affordable Braces Options by Estimated Level of Cost

Affordable Braces Reston, VA

Affordable braces options are available for most patients who desire better alignment for their teeth and jaw. Of course, some options are more affordable than others. This review discussed the estimated cost for the more popular and affordable braces options.

Braces treatment explained

Braces are orthodontic devices that help straighten teeth and jaw position. Traditional braces involve the use of brackets and wires. A bracket is attached to each tooth, and a metal wire runs through the brackets. The orthodontist will then tighten the wire, which pulls teeth into an improved alignment. Of course, much more goes into the treatment plan than brackets and wires; spacers, elastics, retainers, and much more usually play an integral role in the treatment plan.

The different types of braces options (sorted by cost)

There are three primary types of braces treatment. These options are traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and lingual braces. Additionally, clear aligners, often called invisible braces, are an option for many patients. The following is a general overview of each type, the pros and cons for each, and the associated costs.

Traditional metal braces (the most affordable)

Metal braces are perhaps the most well-known form of braces treatment. They consist of metal brackets and a metal wire that helps shift teeth into optimal alignment. As a result, metal braces are a great option for correcting severe teeth and jaw misalignments. This includes but is not limited to overcrowding, crooked teeth, teeth gaps, protruding teeth, underbites, overbites, and crossbites.

Metal braces are the best at correcting severe misalignments reliably. Moreover, they are the most affordable option for patients with severe misalignment (in most cases). This is especially the case when clear aligners are not an option due to the severity of the malocclusion.

Ceramic or tooth-colored braces

Ceramic braces, also called tooth-colored ones, are the most similar alternative to metal ones. The only notable difference is that the brackets are made of ceramic rather than metal. The material makes them far more transparent and less noticeable. As a result, ceramic braces are a great option for those who desire a more discreet treatment (primarily older teenagers and adults).

Ceramic braces are also an affordable option. They cost slightly more than metal braces, however. On average, ceramic braces are between 10 and 25 percent more than metal braces. That said, ceramic braces are significantly less expensive than lingual braces (see below).

Lingual braces (the most expensive)

Lingual braces also use metal brackets and wires, just like traditional braces. The difference is that lingual braces attach to the back of teeth. This makes them essentially invisible to others while smiling, so the patient can keep a great smile throughout treatment.

Lingual braces are the most expensive braces option in most cases. On average, patients can expect to pay from 20 percent more to more than twice as much for lingual braces. The increase in cost is largely due to the complexities of attaching the braces to the back of teeth. This requires more time and skill for the dentist than what would otherwise be required for traditional braces.

Invisible braces or clear aligners (alternative solution)

Invisible braces, more commonly known as clear aligners, are an alternative to traditional braces. This orthodontic treatment solution uses transparent aligner trays, customized in a laboratory to fit properly, slowly shifting teeth into an ideal alignment. The main drawback to clear aligners is that they are not always available for more severe orthodontic cases.

Invisible braces and traditional metal braces are similar in price. On average, they are a slightly more affordable braces treatment option. In addition, the treatment time for invisible braces is usually shorter than for traditional braces. Therefore, patients can expect to pay 5 to 20 percent less for invisible braces if they are a viable solution.

How to choose the best braces option

The first step the patient should take in determining which treatment option is best for their needs, budget, and preference is a consultation visit. This discussion offers an opportunity to meet with the orthodontic team and discuss viable solutions; patients can also discuss payment options and plans during the initial visit. In general, traditional metal braces or clear aligners (if available) are the more affordable solution. However, lingual or ceramic braces may be better if the patient does not mind paying more for unique benefits.
